We will traverse sandy and dirt trails around the hawk watch. Unfortunatley, the hawk watch does not have an accessible ramp and is only accessible by stairs. We do prefer that folks ride the bus to cut down on multiple cars in the park, however, we do understand there may be situations where driving is more accessible. If this is the case, please choose the NO BUS option when registering and know that you are responsible for your own park entry fee ($10).

You must register for this event by purchasing either a BUS ($25) or NO BUS ($20) ticket. This event will not be listed on the normal RSVP page.

The boat route will be mostly in the bay with a section out and around the point. The waters will be subject to weather but are usually calms with a few small swells. If you are prone to motion sickness please prepare with dramamine or your preventative of choice.

Bird Collision Monitoring w/ Bird Safe Philly

Join us on the early morning of Saturday October 5th, from 5:30am to 8am as we partner with Bird Safe Philly to learn about the bird collision monitoring done at Independence National Historical Park and the surrounding buildings. (RSVP Here)

Coffee and snacks will be provided by ICB and all levels of birder are welcome to learn; No experience needed. The event will be conducted on concreate pathways in and around the park (urban city setting). There are benches are throughout the park for rest but there are no public restrooms available.

Depending on attendance, a minimum of 2 people per group will walk and conduct surveys (hopefully we have larger groups). This is an introductory session to bird collision monitoring as conducted by Bird Safe Philly staff and volunteers. The exact meeting location at Independence National Historical Park will be communicated to attendees prior to the day.

Will conduct monitoring across 5 locations in/around the park between 5th St., 6th St., Chestnut St., and Race St. We will also provide gloves, bags, hand sanitizer, and maps.

This event will likely include the observation and collection of deceased and/or injured birds that will be transported to the appropriate facility. It should be understood that the observation of birds in this state can be jarring for some. Please take inventory of your mental/emotional care if attending (hugs/tears/moments of reflection are welcome)

This work is incredibly valuable in advocating for the birds that find refuge in our beautiful city. You can learn more about the importance of this monitoring work here.

ICBC Goes to Central Park

Join us on our first trip to Central Park, NYC! This event kicks off this years Black Birders Week!

We will be welcomed into the park by Indigo Goodson-Fields. A local birder, educator, writer, and poet who shares our wishes and values for Black and brown communities and is familiar with that special NYC birders vibe that we’d love to share.

The bus reservation and RSVP are required. We are only traveling by bus and have a limit of 30 spaces.

We ask that BIPOC attendees RSVP/Reserve a bus spot first and through 18 May 2024.

RSVP and bus reservations will open to Non-BIPOC allies if seats are available on 19 May 2024.

Central park is massive and we will not be able to cover even a sliver of it in only a few hours, however, we will hit some fun and historic spots. We will cross mostly paved trails with small inclines. There are restrooms AND benches throughout the park to rest. Lunch will be provided by ICBC afterwards and prior to returning back to Philly.

We open this particular bird outing to celebrate the beginning of Black Birders Week by finding refuge and joy in a historical space for Black and brown multicultural communities. We are at all times respectful of one another. We are considerate of new birders. We acknowledge an individual's pronouns. We are not racist, sexist, ableist, classist, homophobic, or xenophobic.

Intro to Birding at The Discovery Center

Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic and Damien Ruffner as we introduce you to the wonderful world of birding! Birding (aka bird watching) has been a pastime for centuries. But it can be intimidating to start. "Where do I go to watch birds?" "What equipment do I need?" "What do I look for first?" This series is designed to answer those questions and introduce the world of birding to new audiences, novice birders, or anyone with an interest in the outdoors. We will take a deep-dive into the equipment, techniques, and codes of conduct of birding. This first workshop will concentrate on the equipment needed to bird and finding local groups to bird with as you enter a new hobby! This workshop will focus on identification and data gathering. TWO workshops to choose from: 9am-11am or 1pm-3pm.
